Scholarship objectives essay example
It was November 2016, just a few days before Thanksgiving. My class took a field trip to the soup kitchen to serve lunch. I poured hot soup into bowls as people started filling the room. It was a great way to warm up on a cold November day. Their eyes looked empty and sad. “Happy Thanksgiving” we said to each other, our eyes closed.
A few days later, as I sat surrounded by family and turkey and gravy and pumpkin pie, I couldn’t help but feel like something wasn’t right. Why was I so lucky to have all this food? I thought about the people from the soup kitchen and wondered where they were. I knew then and there that my purpose in life was to help people.
I returned to the soup kitchen as a volunteer a week later, and a week later.
I envisioned a world of possibilities for these people. I said to myself while volunteering, “I’d like to hook him up to a rehab program, daycare for her child until she can find work.” I have dreams of one day being able to help people make changes in their lives.
For this reason, I will be starting my undergraduate degree in social work at Boston University in the fall. I am sure that my studies will instill in me the skills and knowledge I need to pursue a career as a social worker. I hope to be able to help those less fortunate find hope in their lives.
This scholarship will help me achieve my educational and career goals. I’ve been working hard to save for college, but with the skyrocketing costs of tuition, my part-time job just wasn’t enough. I plan to work while I am in college, but I would like to focus a lot of my time on my studies. This scholarship will help by lowering my college costs and the amount of hours I will need to work throughout my studies. In this way, I will be able to continue my academic achievements. It will also give me time to find an internship. I hope to find an internship at a homeless shelter in the Boston area.
It’s been two and a half years since I first entered this soup kitchen. That day undoubtedly changed the course of my life. My experiences there, talking to people and hearing their stories, instilled in me a passion for helping people make positive changes in their lives. This scholarship will allow me to pursue the education I need to achieve my goals.
